Like Tweet Pin it Share Share Email

As a web developer, the start of a new year likely excites you as you tend to look forward to the new emerging trends from the previous year which will be at the forefront and 2017 is no different. This is because technology keeps evolving at a rapid pace and, as the web has become an integral part of people’s lives, you need to be on your toes to learn new skills, explore different ideas, and keep up with the latest trends.

So, what are some of the trends that you can expect to see in 2017? Let us take a look.

1.  Emergence of Several Developer Communities

Learning is perhaps the best way to keep yourself updated about the new technologies emerging in the web space. And, most learning materials are available at your fingertips thanks to several online developer communities, such as GitHub (access to free open source projects) and StackOverflow. You can expect many such developer communities emerging and being accessed by web developers.

2.  Angular 2 and Beyond

Last year saw the release of Angular 2, which helps you deliver an engaging user experience with a desktop or web app (sometimes even with minimal coding). Angular 2 is a complete overhaul of Google’s browser and mobile app framework (frontend JavaScript).

The new year will likely witness major changes in this highly popular framework, especially with the pre-defined release schedule which promises three minor updates and one major update every six months.

3.  Rise of Artificial Intelligence

Well, you would already have heard that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the future. And, based on the way that machines have started to think, you need to realize that the future is here. A prime example is the AlphaGo program designed by Google DeepMind, which managed to beat professional Go players.

So, how can you use AI as part of your website development services? For starters, you already have the Wix artificial design intelligence platform whose ADI develops a solid web design and development strategy based on the data gathered from millions of Wix users.

Another example of AI-based website development is The Grid that allows you to create slick websites by just sharing information (related to colors, branding, layout, and so on) with their AI program titled Molly.

4.  Extensive Implementation of Virtual Reality

We have already witnessed the impact of Virtual Reality (VR) on the gaming industry with the success of Oculus Rift and Vive. Google and Mozilla are even believed to be working on Application Program Interfaces (APIs) that enable the transition of VR technology to the web. So, you can expect many different web apps being developed using VR in the months to come.

Apart from gaming, the other areas which will see more VR usage in apps are real estate and news coverage.

5.  Updated Version of Ruby on Rails 5

The highly popular, cost effective, and decade-old website development framework, Ruby on Rails, was updated in mid 2016. This year will see the popularity of Ruby on Rails grow even more, especially with regard to the following core features that it offers:

  • ActionCable – for using websockets in real-time apps
  • TurboLinks 5 – for creating single page-like apps directly from the Rails stack

6.  Re-Emergence of Static Website Generators

The static site generators have long been known for creating websites by using plain text, mostly stored in files, instead of databases. These static website generators (for example Jekyll) do not possess any real-time content which is necessary these days. However, their ability to provide benefits in terms of security, speed, and handling huge traffic flow can still make developers consider using them, especially with content and template deployment becoming easier because of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and APIs.

7.  Innovation with Parallax Effects

As 2017 progresses, certain website design trends are also likely to emerge, along with several development trends. One such expected trend is the extensive use of parallax for your website which gives it an amazing 3D effect. The parallax innovation uses multiple backgrounds that appear to move at varying speeds, thereby creating a significant sense of depth.

8.  Increasing Use of Yarn

Facebook’s newly developed package manager, Yarn, is expected to grow in popularity in 2017 as it ventures to address the issues with Node Package Managers (NPMs) in terms of security, consistency, and performance. And, like all other package managers, Yarn will make it easy for you with regard to installation, un-installation, updating, and configuration of code modules.

9.  Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) has opened up an array of innovative opportunities, but therein lies the threat of security. As a developer, you face the challenge of developing web apps that can effectively communicate with various IoT-enabled devices. And, you will have to ensure secure data transfer (send and receive) across non-internet connected devices brought into the network connectivity.

Your website development company will also have to start ensuring that your sites are highly optimized for a seamless viewing experience across a range of new devices, including watches and cars, in addition to the normal computing devices, such as tablets, mobiles, laptops, and desktop PCs.

10.              JavaScript to Continue Its Dominance

This year will likely see JavaScript remain the most popular technology used by full stack developers and there is no reason why you should not continue using the same. It helps you generate HTML right on the browser.

It will be interesting to see how the above-mentioned trends develop during the course of 2017. Do you think we have missed any popular and fast emerging web development trends? Feel free to share your feedback or suggestions in the comments section below.
